About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota. Kari has worked with students with autism spectrum disorders for over 20 years, has served as president of the Minnesota Autism Society, and works with the Minnesota Autism Network to bring training opportunities to teachers. Kari also developed the ASD certificate program at Hamline University and is the director of Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children with Asperger Syndrome. Kari recently received a fellowship that will allow her to travel throughout the world studying Asperger Syndrome to help determine the critical elements of an appropriate educational program.

Mitzi Beth Curtis is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota and serves as an adjunct instructor for Hamline University’s autism certificate program. She has worked in special education, supported employment, and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

As a teacher of autistic children, this book is invaluable. It is written in language that is easy for my students to understand and follow the directions..... I would be lost with it.

Five Stars for Five Point Scale

The concept in this book is one of those that makes you say, "Well YEAH, DUH." Because it's so simple and workable you wished you'd thought of it yourself! The basic premise is any behavior goal you want to work on with a child can be addressed in a five point scale. I'll give my son as an example. He yells like a maniac...when he's just talking in his normal voice. This drives me CRAZY. So, his scale is 5: I'm being kidnapped, or I'm just having a really, really, really good time on the playground OUTSIDE. 4. Loud play, but not ear piercing. 3. NORMAL INSIDE VOICE (my favorite) 2. Shhhh, whisper and 1. SILENCE (okay, I fibbed, many times THIS is my favorite.) It can also be used for expressing how the CHILD is FEELING. Anxiety levels, fear levels. The idea is that you can address many different issues whether at home or school, it gives clear examples, reproducable sheets and it's an easy concept for teachers, parents and kids to understand. I also love the companion book "When My Autism Gets Too Big", which I highly recommend for kids (and for the adults who care about them.) Incidentally, while the examples in the book are color coded and they are ingeneious ways to implement them in the school and classroom--as a parent I think that there's a reason gave me FIVE FINGERS! The Incredible Five Point Scale of course!! When I hold up three fingers, my son's voice automatically lowers because it's his signal to go DOWN on the scale.

Great book! Fun, nice visuals. Also, there is a DVD, which is a great way to demonstrate the program and have all team members (at home and at school) on the same page.

Fun for Students with Autism

I purchased this book for work with teens with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and related disorders. It is Incredible! My students have a limited emotional vocabulary and an "all-or-nothing" sense of their upsets or other issues. The Five Point Scale can be adapted for most situations. My students are learning to create their own Five Point Scales; they draw their five faces to represent the range of how a particular feeling looks, for example "When I'm Frustrated." Next we are going to use photographs - students taking pictures of their five faces to foster intra-personal intelligence (how my face looks when I'm ...) and learn how to emotionally self-regulate (when i feel my face getting up to a 3 I should . . . ). My only criticism is that the scale is not consistent in it's ratings. One area uses 1 as Lowest and 5 as highest [e.g. ANGER: 1 = annoyed and 5 is rage/melt down]. Another scale is reversed with 1 as the highest and 5 the lowest. This confuses the students so we change the scale for consistency. The Incredible Five Point Scale is useful scale for teachers and parents of students who need support in emotional self-regulation, not just those with autism. It is concrete, visual, and students are engaged in their own learning when they develop their personal scale to use. Adults could use the activities in this book in a fun way with the students so that they are engaged in their own learning. It is much better than arguing or lecturing an upset teen.

About the Author
Author Rajiv Bakshi, 62 served Punjab & Sind Bank for 35 years travelling from Guwahati (being his first Branch in 1976) & Machhiwara District Ludhiana which was his last Branch from which he retired in February 2012. A proud alumnus of the prestigious Sainik School Kapurthala and DAV College Jallandhar where he got the college colour for the Best Speaker in English. In his wife Mrinalini a Post Graduate in Hindi literature he found a life partner full of life ,an avid reader and an all rounder who has been managing his life and family efficiently and has been instrumental to an extent in writing of his memoirs.

A Good Message

When I first received this book I was immediately struck by the size of the novel. It is smaller than I expected. This comes across to me that the author is a humble man. I don't know why I felt that way, I just did.

Each story, there are twenty of them, are short and sweet. The style of writing is interesting because I can really pick up on his dialect by the way he writes. It gives an authenticity to it.

What I really enjoyed was that each tale are poignant to him personally. Because of this there were times I found myself laughing and other times I became emotional as he described the scene.

He talks about things in India that I'm sure carry more meaning to those that live there (for example the money) but it didn't detract from the narration.In fact what it did do, for me, is highlight how much the same we are, no matter where we live. The message that I took from it was that we are not Indians or Americans but we are all human. Sure the places we live have different ways. Perhaps speak another language but at the end of the day we all breath the same air.

I am not sure if that was his intention but I found it to be an uplifting message.

In the end, I'm glad I read it. I mostly go for inspirational/self-help and fictional books, so this made a pleasant change. I recommend it.

This is a first book by the writer who is a Banker by profession. The stories are from his life's experience with a human touch. The writer has a lucid flare for writing and stories advanced with twists & surprises. The writer has beautifully created many characters in the book who could relate to many persons in our daily life.

Nora Bacon is a professor of English and writing program administrator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Her research, begun at UC Berkeley in the 1990s, has examined service-learning pedagogy, the development of "writing agility," and the relationship between texts and the contexts in which they are written and read. Great reference, good book for class

Needed this book for my English class. It's a good guide to basic and intermediate English grammar and language usage. It's definitely an improvement over Strunk and White's dry book. But if you're use to their style, the new grammar rules will shock you.

I am a big fan of this cookbook series. I picked some of them up a long, long time ago before we knew I was gluten intolerant. I found their cakes and bakes book fantastic, and I liked their quick meals book as well. I have found their recipes straightforward and simple, and delicious to boot. But this cookbook has been neat as well. So.

This book has recipes for breakfast, lunch and light bites, suppers, savoury bakes, desserts, traditional cakes and bakes, small cakes and biscuits and tray bakes. Each of the recipes has a photo, except for the variations of some of the recipes printed at the bottom of some of them. The photos are lovely. For potential bakers, the baked goods in this book use flours like rice flour, polenta, brown rice flour, gluten-free plain flour, potato flour, etc. So there is that.

Out of the desserts I have made the Lemon Cheesecake (and I did the Lemon and Raspberry Swirl version), and I also tried the chestnut and chocolate roulade - although I didn't have much success with that, and I have also adapted the Victoria Sponge cake to use the flours I had on hand, and that was an absolute success, and I have also made the Pistachio and Chocolate Chip Shortbread and the Orange and Polenta Cookies (which I made with lemon instead), as well as the pecan pies (I replaced the chickpea flour with buckwheat flour).

Pros: heaps of gluten free recipes divided into neat little sections, most (if not all) of the recipes have possible adaptations listed beneath, each recipe had a lovely little photo, and a lot of the recipes I've done have been very forgiving of alterations.

Cons: Does recommend some flours that may be hard to find for some, the book itself is quite little - or at least the copy I have is quite small.

Paula D. McClain is Professor of Political Science, Professor of Public Policy, Dean of the Graduate School, Vice Provost for Graduate Education, and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in the Social Sciences at Duke University. She is a premier author, scholar, and series editor of numerous works on urban, racial, and ethnic politics.

Steven C. Tauber is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida. He is known for his work on judicial politics, particularly on social movements' use of litigation as a strategy. His work has covered civil rights groups and the animal rights movement.

I actually bought this book for the sole purpose of me not being able to get it from my school's bookstore. I bought it for my Political Science class and when I say it's really informative and my class is amazing. I'm pleased to say I won't sell it back. It'll now be a reference book!
