a comprehensive guide on strategic planning

Many books on Strategic Management try to include every aspect and become thick and heavy. This book focuses on an easy to understand process, down to the point. It guides you through the different steps from external and internal analysis to developing your core competencies and understanding and key factors of success in the industry. Most strategic plans focus on single business strategies. So does this book. I include this book in the teaching materials in my MBA courses on Strategic Management. The software is a convenient tool for all who are planning strategies. I can only recommend this 2nd edition of a popular book which was sold out for several years.

Extremely accessible treatment of Long-range dependence

The author has prepared an extremely accessible treatment for the time series analysis of long-range dependent processes. The book can serve as a wonderful introduction to the topic for novices, as well as a valuable desktop reference for practitioners.

The author does a very good job of keeping the prerequisites from mathematics and statistics to the bare minimum. On the mathematics side, you'll need to solid understanding of undergraduate calculus, including infinite series and sequences. I recommend Apostle's two volume set Calculus, Vol. 1 and Calculus, Vol. 2 . Elementary probability and statistics are required, and Rao s Linear Statistical Inference and Its Application is a nice introduction. Finally, you'll need some exposure to the ARIMA analysis of time series. Try Brockwell & Davis Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting.

In the first chapter, Beran provides a wonderfully intuitive introduction in which he asks the reader to consider what happens to time-honored statistical techniques for estimating mean & variance by sample mean and sample variance in the case the usually IID (independent, identically distributed) assumption is no longer valid. This leads quite naturally into a discussion of the autocorrelation function for stationary processes, which is at the core of the investigation. The chapter concludes with a number of real-world examples of long-range dependent time series. Note that the author uses the term "long-memory" to be synonymous with long-range dependence. This is not necessarily a widely adopted practice, so take care when reading other authors. The Nile river data set is introduced at the end of the chapter, and this data will be referenced repeatedly throughout the remainder of the book.

Chapter 2 introduces the formal definition of long-range dependence in terms of the rate of decay of the autocorrelation function of a stationary time series (or equivalently via asymptotic properties of the spectral density function). Next, self-similar processes are introduced, with the most well-known of these being fractional Brownian motion. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the fractional ARIMA model, which is emphasized in the remainder of the text.

Chapter 3 is a short chapter which records the limit theorems needed for the asymptotic distribution of maximum likelihood estimators found later in the text. The results are stated and motivated, and the author provides copious literature references if the reader is interested in tracking down the mathematical proofs of these results.

Chapter 4 begins study of statistical inference for long-range dependent processes, and this starts with the Hurst R/S statistic. This discussion is reinforced with the use of the Nile river data, together with chart plots for a number of sample statistics.

Maximum likelihood estimation of the Hurst parameter H in fractional ARIMA models begins in Chapter 5 with a focus on time-domain techniques, although analysis of spectral density plays an important role. The exact Gaussian MLE and Whittle's approximate MLE are introduced and asymptotic normality of the estimators is established via use of the limit theorems of Chapter 3.

The emphasis shifts to spectral density and frequency domain in chapter 6 by considering techniques based on periodogram analysis. The fractional EXP model is introduced and considered as an alternative to the fARIMA model studied so far.

Up to this point, the main object of study has been stationary Gaussian processes. Chapter 7 provides a glimpse of some techniques used to non-stationary processes, or non-Gaussian stationary processes. This is an active area of research and the treatment here is provided to give the reader an appreciation of these issues, rather than a comprehensive review of the state-the-art.

Chapter 8 is principally concerned with estimating the mean and standard deviation for non-centered processes, as well the problem of predicting future mean values.

The question of performing linear regression on dependent variable with long-range dependent explanatory variables and long-range dependent innovations is discussed in Chapter 9. This is a must read chapter for econometricians and anyone working with economic time series data.

The next two chapters are brief, and touch on topics such as goodness-of-fit tests, simulation and fractional GARMA processes. In the final chapter, the author includes SPLUS programs along with data sets (including the Nile River data).

About the Author
Simon was born in Mexicali, Mexico in 1961 and came to the United States when he was just over a year old. He worked to earn money to pay for his college tuition, and graduated from the Art Center College Of Design with his Bachelor's Degree in Art. Simon Silva is a well-known artist, author, and speaker who travels around the country to do presentations for educators, students, parents, and business people. He knows firsthand the importance of education and is the only person in family to have graduated from both high school and college. One of eleven children in a family of farmers, he grew up as a migrant student and relied heavily on his artistic skills and interest to cope with what was at times a difficult childhood.

When you're a kid, you remain happy and excited over your creations as no obstacles existed to stop your progress. So whatever happened to this frame of mind? Whether your an educator, hair stylist, or accountant, this book takes everyone back to basics in recapturing talents and concepts that come from our youthful minds.

About the Author
Tom Barone received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1978. Barone currently teaches courses in curriculum studies and qualitative research methods as Professor of Education in the Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, in Tempe, AZ. His books, articles, and professional presentations reveal an interest in curriculum as aesthetic, political, and institutional text. Throughout his career, Barone has explored, conceptually and through examples, a variety of narrative and arts-based approaches to contextualizing and theorizing about significant educational issues.

Elliot W. Eisner is professor emeritus of education and art at Stanford University. He has taught at Stanford since 1965 where he is best known for his scholarship in three fields: arts education, curriculum studies, and educational evaluation. His research interests focus on the development of aesthetic intelligence and the use of critical methods from the arts in studying and improving educational practice. Dr. Eisner has lectured throughout the world and has published more than 17 books, including The Enlightened Eye: Qualitative Inquiry and the Enhancement of Educational Practice, which explores the uses of critical methods from the arts in studying and describing schools, classrooms, and teaching processes. Dr. Eisner is the recipient of numerous awards for his work, including the 2005 Grawemeyer Award, the Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award from the American Educational Research Association, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Fulbright Fellowship. Professor Eisner has served as president of the American Educational Research Association, the National Art Education Association, and the International Society for Education through Art, and the Jogn Dewey Society.

Very Weak Understanding of Art

Awful, awful book. The problem with a lot of these art-based guys is that they don't know anything about contemporary art, all of their ideas are based on art forms that artists have abandoned for the very reason these academics are seeking them out. And they really romanticize the s*** out of the arts and artists. It's embarrassing.

This book is in no regard about "Advanced" malware analysis like the title suggests. It is not even an introductory malware analysis book. All the book covers is how to install various tools that you would need to start with malware analysis 101. The books doesn't show disassembly of malware, it doesn't discuss any Windows API calls or any other Windows internals. The book doesn't even teach you what malware really is.

The first chapter (page 6) contains the following gem: "Static analysis is the easiest [...] malware analysis process. [...] It is as easy as clicking some buttons or using a command line". This sums up the book pretty well: according to the author, malware analysis is mostly about installing tools and clicking some buttons. That might be part of it, but I don't consider that "Advanced Malware Analysis" or even "Malware Analysis".

What does the book tackle then? The book is mostly filled with screenshots and very detailled tutorials how to install tools.

You got screenshots of the Windows update settings, the Windows 7 security settings, the user account settings, the word option setting. You even got a full page dedicated to a screenshot of xcopy.exe copying some files.

An then you have tutorials. There are 25 pages dedicated how to install and use gpg to encrypt malware for moving it from source to analysis machine. Or tutorials how to install InstallRite. Of course accompanied by four screenshots of the install wizard with the options to click Next or Cancel.

Chapter 11, "Inspecting Static Malware", is finally dedicated to analysing malware. It is only 19 pages long and contains the following tutorials: how to identify the file type with "file" for PEid", how to upload the file to Virustotal (of course we get to see two pages of Virustotal screenshots), and how to use "strings" to extract the strings. THAT'S IT!

Malware Analysis is not about installing tools and you certainly don't need pages and pages of screenshots and step by step instructions on how to install zip or wireshark. If you need help with that, you can easily find better tutorials online. If you really want to learn about Malware Analysis, I highly recommend the book "Practical Malware Analysis". If you like the idea of step-by-step instructions, then get the "Malware Analyst's Cookbook and DVD".

Advanced?

Under a different title, I feel this book may have been okay (thus the two stars), but as it stands it is highly misleading. The most advanced concept covered in this book is arguably an in-depth copy/paste of the information contained within a PE file, which can easily be found online for free. In another section, the author walks you through the generation of an MD5 and SHA1 hash using Python without explaining fully what they're useful for. On the next page, he suggests downloading a piece of software and "[making] sure that the one you are downloading is legitimate and not carrying any malicious software." This would be a wonderful time to mention using the hashes HE JUST INTRODUCED in a practical manner, but instead he keeps right on trucking into another "lab". These "labs" that the book so lovingly totes are little more than an excuse to use the Courier font and tend to span fewer than 15-20 lines. Most merely follow the pattern of "Install tool, run tool, compare output to this!". The book reads as though it was written with what the author could think up off the top of his head and arranged into semi-topical groups rather than a natural flow of important information.

Overall, I would NOT recommend this book to anyone with any sort of background in malware analysis. Those just starting out or looking for a quick refresher may find some useful tidbits here and there, but there are certainly better books available for the price. Furthermore, this book only focuses on Windows malware. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something that may be good to know ahead of time.

Typing "Malware Analysis" into Amazon's search bar instantly reveals a number of books I found much more informative and highly recommend including:
- Practical Malware Analysis: The Hands-On Guide to Dissecting Malicious Software: suggested by another reviewer and highly-regarded in the malware world
- Malware Analyst's Cookbook and DVD: Tools and Techniques for Fighting Malicious Code: also suggested and delves deeper into the different tools and setup techniques available
- The Art of Memory Forensics: Detecting Malware and Threats in Windows, Linux, and Mac Memory: more advanced than the previous two and an excellent way to dig further into your analysis

Better (and easier) than my textbook.

I am taking my Pathophysiology course online. Pathophysiology is the first class to make me question my academic abilities. I began the semester struggling with pathophysiology, so I searched for complimentary material on Amazon to help me bring the concepts of pathophysiology together. I now use this book as my first source in my pathophysiology class; I rarely use my textbook. I am almost done with this semester and maintaining a grade of A.

Like anatomy and physiology, this book is generally divided into body systems and their disorders. Each disorder is given in-depth consideration into signs & symptoms, pathophysiology, and treatment options. Recovery is mildly touched upon, but that is not the purpose of this subject. Navigation is very simple, you do not have to scan through unnecessary material to find the disorder for which you are searching. You may be overwhelmed by the amount of material listed in the table-of-contents at first. To overcome this, I use Kindle For PC to find the exact material I need to cover, then go straight to the spot in my Kindle to read the material.

The Kindle price is incredibly reasonable. The pictures are hand drawn, so that is one reason to keep your course textbook. Find this material difficult to read through? Use the text-to-speech function on the Kindle; it's like getting the material in a lecture.

Great refresher for pathophysiology, and for new students to this field.

I actually read this book all the way through! No really, it took a while, because it was straight pathophysiology with no relief. Even though I enjoy pathophysiology, I actually started it because I have to teach it for the fall...and was waiting for the class textbook. I just wanted a relatively quick review, because I know most of this stuff. But even though this was written by a British author, this was a great book for doing exactly that. Be aware a few of the medical terminology are different from American medical terminology, but the rest of the book was a great find. This is much easier than a textbook...not crowded with colored pictures. This covers the basics, and I would highly recommend it for my students. It's online with Kindle, and it was free so it was a great price. There are some simple hand-drawn pictures, which assist in the understanding rather than confusing people.

This is very basic. It didn't go into all the various diseases, say for the brain. Actually, if you are looking for more neurological problems, this isn't the book. It covers things like diabetes, liver problems, some skins problems, kidney problems (without going too far into the logistics of the urinary tract). Good refresher book. Thoroughly enjoyed the straight forward writing. Why do textbook writers always insist on making the text for students more difficult than it absolutely needs to be? (This book didn't do that at all!)

I totally agree with JF. I am a radiography student and had no background in biology at all. The notes I was given were cryptic and textbooks overly detailed with beautiful diagrams which makes no sense. This book gives you the foundation layers in which all other information can be built upon. Wished I had the author as my A&P lecturer.
