Magnifico! Bravo!

First, note that Amazon seems to have the price listed incorrectly. I've seen the book in bookshops, AND checked the Oxford University Press website: the price should be only $60.00, and NOT a whopping $150.00. I've tried to contact Amazon to get the price corrected.
I'm very familiar with this dictionary from my school; it has spoiled me for other dictionaries. It's quite large and hefty, so you wouldn't want to lug it very far from your desk until you install wheels. I'm constantly surprised at the many colloquial English expressions for which it provides translations. (It does not neglect most common slang, including obscenities, either). The dictionary provides plenty of very handy examples in colloquial Italian sentences. For example, I was delighted to find "Why can't you keep your big mouth shut?!" - " Perche non puoi tenere chiusa quella boccaccia?!"
In short, this dictionary is a delight for those in love with language, and who are falling in love with Italian. Great for browsing; you're sure to find yourself going off on one tangent after another.
Like most really good foreign language dictionaries, this one leans towards British useage - but will often provide "Americanisms." (This feature can come in handy; how else would you find a translation for "gobsmacked?")
The Oxford compares favorably to the "Harper Collins Sansoni Italian Unabridged Dictionary" (which I have at home); the latter, for instance, generally does not provide example sentences.

About the Author
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer.  He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.  You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.

Great Book, in the Classic Tradition

This book was one of my favorites growing up. Unlike other favorites that I found weren't so great anymore, this one has held up. It is much better than either Blueberries for Sal or Make Way for Ducklings because there are more plot turns and the color in the book just pours and splashes out of the book. The illustrations are just fabulous.
The book also uses nice alliteration and allows you to read it straight out or in voice (as a new englander or maybe Arlo Guthrie in Alice's restaurant - a sing-songy cadence -- check back after you read it twice and see what I mean). There are some repeated parts (descriptions of sounds and the leaky parts of the boat) that make the book fun to listen to for pre-readers as well as aurally rocking your child to sleep. My son has liked this since he was about 5 (now 7)

a winner - loved it thirty years ago, love it still!

when i was a kid my grandparents lived next door to robert mccloskey, and he gave me a copy of this book. i fell in love with this book then, and still love it. it's light-hearted, creative, tension-building - and like all of his books, wonderfully illustrated.

mccloskey takes us to a time and place that mixes america from the 40s or 50s with the fanciful land of his imagination - a great combo!

burt dow is an gentle old sea salt, and his seagull, the whales, and his adventure spun magic in my memory!

i hope all kids get a chance to read this story!

I knew Burt Dow!

This is a wonderful book, all of the kids I know love it (and I have gifted it to many).

When I was a little boy I lived on Deer Isle, Maine and I met Burt Dow who was a real person and he did have a old boat in his front yard filled with flowers. It brings back many memories. I think any child of the right age will like this book.

Excellent Analyses of Ancient International Relations

Paul Collins has written an impeccable book, and its strength lies not only in its careful analytical summations of known ancient Near Eastern history but also especially in its attention to international relations in the time period from the Late Bronze Age to Neo-Babylon. Collins has done justice to what happened in Mesopotamia at the same time as in Egypt and how these regions reacted or responded to each other, with detailed critical understanding of the ebb and flow of power dynamics between these regions (when one was strong, the other usually weaker; when equally strong, a clash was inevitable in the Levantine buffer zone). While I agree with another reviewer that selective cultural highlights would make this book even better (e.g., Gilgamesh only receives a few sentences) - although also possibly making the book too long - this is not its stated historically purposed purview. While I also agree that integration of illustration and text or discussion of illustrations therein, adding to its excellent captions, might improve the book, its many beautiful and iconic images (in keeping with British Museum Press high standards) are lavishly ample and greatly representative of the cultures therein. I will certainly use the book in my next Stanford course on the Ancient Near East, and I hope a paperback edition is forthcoming for university students, for whom it will be the current definitive text.

An excellent historical overview

This book does an impressive job of pulling together the threads of the diverse histories of the ancient world into a coherent fabric that illustrates the relations of these kingdoms to one another. For many readers it will introduce peoples about whom they may know little or nothing, and show how their histories fit into the better known histories of lands such as Egypt and Greece. This book will be of interest to any who have studied any particular ancient civilization and wondered how it fits into the larger tapestry of ancient history.

I have only one small problem with this book (and it is a very small one): The author's insistence on using the term "Iraq" rather than "Mesopotamia" throughout his text. He explains it thus in his Preface: "The term Iraq (a name applied to the region of the modern country from at least the sixth century AD) is used in preference to the Greek term Mesopotamia which is becoming less meaningful for younger generations of readers." For someone like me, seeing "Iraq" used 2000 years too early in the context of Mesopotamia is both jarring and distracting. I also submit that avoiding the term "Mesopotamia" is not the best way to combat the trend of it "becoming less meaningful." However, as I said, it is a small point and does little to detract from the overall usefulness of this very useful work.

A Straightforward Political History

From Egypt To Babylon narrates the political history of the early Middle East and eastern Mediterranean from 1500 BC to 500 BC (roughly, from the Hittites to the Persians,) using the so-called Low Chronology for the earlier dates. The main focus of the book is on kingdoms and empires, major rulers, wars, alliances, and trade. Cultural matters, such as literature, art and religion, are mentioned, if at all, only in passing. The book does include captioned photographs of objects in the British Museum collection, but these are independent of the author's text.

In only 200 pages, many of them partly occupied by illustrations, it is hard for any author to do justice to a full millennium of Ancient Middle Eastern history. The result in this case is mostly a laundry list of kings and empires, but such frameworks are important; readers who would be satisfied with that, could certainly consider buying this book.

Excellent Reference

This masterful textbook on field of cardiology is 2,600 pages in length, and covers almost every topic you would want to research. More importantly it recognizes that thousands of photographs and diagrams make the text explanations easier to understand. There are two other competing textbooks of comparable length and coverage in the field but their writing style seems far more complex and difficult reading. Dr. Chatterjee is an internationally renowned expert in the field and an excellent teacher. As you would expect from the recipient of the "Gifted Teacher Award" from the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Chatterjee's presentation on subjects is clear, well organized, and through.

Comparing Four Texts for PA's, Med Students, Residents...

I was recently on a committee preparing an ACC report on textbooks for young or new Cardiology practitioners, and older autodidacts brushing up on the latest science for a career change or advance. As a technical editor and volunteer at preptorial dot org, I prepare the exam questions both for their free test banks, and the actual professional exams for credentialing and CME's/ CPE's.
The standards we used were completeness, readability, level, relevance to exams, digital/web resources and price/value. Out of 22 texts and books evaluated, 4 got 10 stars (the equivalent of Amazon's 5 stars):

--Chizner: Clinical Cardiology Made Ridiculously Simple (Edition 4) (Medmaster Ridiculously Simple)
--Topol: The Topol Solution: Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, Third Edition with DVD, Plus Integrated Content Website (Topol,Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine)
--Chatterjee: Cardiology: An Illustrated Textbook (2 Volume set)
--Holler: Cardiology Essentials

First, stats:

Chizner: $20, 2014, 365 pages, Not an Illustrated text
Topol: $240 (but $6 US used), 2006, 1,600 pages, Illustrated
Chatterjee: $150, 2012, Two volumes (2,600 pages), Highly Illustrated
Holler: $52, 2007, 284 pages, Some illustration, PA oriented, some $30 used

Differences and reasons for high ratings: Chizner is the most up to date, has the highest cost/benefit ratio, and is very technical, packed with information and fine print, but not illustrated. This is ideal for the nurse/ PA/ Hospitalist going INTO Card, not just brushing up. Numerous up to date web resources and the authors respond quickly to inquiries.

Topol is older and originally very expensive, but also has numerous illustrations, web references that are mostly up to date even now, and is extremely comprehensive with a non intimidating writing style. The real value is that it is now available for under $10 US from many sources, which is extreme value for content. This still is one of five top picks for Card programs at med schools, and a top pick for library specialty collections at schools and hospitals.

Holler is specific for PA's and really gets down to the bedside nitty gritty, as does Chizner--very real world, although far less technical than Chizner. If you're a math wiz, go with Chizner, if you love patient interaction but also are a tech, Holler is outstanding.
The best of breed, but relatively expensive, is Chatterjee. This is now the number one choice for Card classes as well as residents in med schools and teaching hospitals. The price/value is the highest for relevance, with thousands of pages and illustrations, and voted the best teaching/writing style of ANY technical textbook in med, not just Card! Even valuable used, you will rarely find this, with CD, at deep discounts.

Choice depends on your objectives. Comprehensive knowledge: Chatterjee/Topol; Deep science: both of those plus Chizner; PA/brush up, test prep: Chizner, with some Holler. PA/Nurse/Hospitalist: Holler specializes and shines here, but Chizner also is outstanding, even though it is a deep read with lots of math and science.
Tip: visit the links above and do a comparative "look inside" if you're unsure of level. As far as sales statistics, Chizner wins, but that is generally a price function.

If you are doing self study, sorry about this due to price, but Chatterjee is unequalled for both explanatory power and illustrations, with less of a need for an instructor. This book supports, with empirical data and analysis, important historical and contemporary insights about homeownership. Significant conclusions are that homeownership serves the interests of those who profit from the establishment of the complex world of realtors, builders and bankers more than homeowners themselves; that the promotion of homeownership as building solid citizens has been overplayed in the serve of that complex world; that the promotion of homeownership as a financial investment is recent and problematic; that homeownership has been part of the basis for exclusionary politics; and, finally that crucial determinants of community are residential stability and inclusiveness.
