Burke brings back Dave Robicheaux in this gripping sequel to Heaven's Prisoners ( LJ 4/1/88). Dave, a former homicide cop, is trying to run his fishing business, care for six-year-old-orphan Alafair, and come to terms with the violent death of his wife, Annie. A chance encounter with an old friend haunted by a troubling secret sets off a chain of events that leaves Dave framed for murder. Desperate to prove his innocence and protect Alafair, Robicheaux is forced to conduct his own investigation. Robicheaux is a complex and very believable character, battling alcoholism, haunted by his wife's death, struggling to hold onto his Catholic faith. Surrounded by violence, he is a man of integrity trying to find an honorable way out. As such he should appeal to fans of Travis McGee and readers of well-crafted suspense. Skillfully evoked settings add to the book's appeal. Highly recommended.

The first is one of the best

Having read James Lee Burke's entire Dave Robicheaux series, I have to say that this novel, which introduced the flawed ex-cop with the mystical bent, is still one of the best. There are several things about this book that hit me as unique and made me want to return every time Burke served up another helping; the first is that Burke's ability with description and locale are unparalled, the second is the depth of character he was able to give Robicheaux by focusing on his personal demons (drink, violence and inner torment from loss and regret), and third is the 'mystical' element that informs each book - sometimes more than others - and allows the plot to be advanced by such devices as messages in dreams and intimations of a 'higher power.' Since Burke himself is a recovering alcoholic he is able to make this side of Dave's life quite real and moving.
This book (which won the Edgar Award in 1990) differs from later ones in the series in that Dave strays far afield from the rural Louisiana coast setting readers normally associate with him. But he is also, in the beginning, a more complex and interesting character. As the series progresses he becomes stiffer and more self righteous. Here he is unsure of himself and trying to come to grips with a life that has him on the ropes.
This is some of Burke's best writing and I would highly recommend it to mystery fans who have never tasted this rich Louisiana stew. It is unique and memorable.

Excellent story and characters

Of all James Lee Burke's wonderful books, this was his first commercial success and remains his best single novel. It is a gritty mystery set in Louisiana which introduces us to Dave Robicheaux, a flawed but intelligent and good-hearted lead character.
Burke is a wonderful writer for two main reasons. First, his characters are well-written; they are memorable, realistic, and intriguing. Their dialogue absolutely CRACKLES.
Secondly, no reader can be unaffected by his descriptions- poetic even in the most grisly scenes. Seeing these scenes through Robicheaux's eyes, scenes as well-crafted as only Burke can do, we realize the depth and beauty of Robicheaux's mind.
Black Cherry Blues is less a Mystery Novel and more a Literary Work, an ideal way to spend an evening.

My New Favorite Detective Series

Black Cherry Blues is my second James Lee Burke read - I also enjoyed Pegasus Descending. I think this is the superior book in my opinion but nevertheless I'm now hooked on the Dave Robicheaux series and have to get them all.

I would compare Burke's writing to Michael Connelly in regards to a dark element in all the characters - "good" and "bad" ones. These are flawed characters who've lived hard lives. Dave Robicheaux is like your "Harry Bosch" character of Michael Connelly's except with a more small town Louisiana/Cajun flavor.

Burke has a real talent for taking you to Louisiana and back - the anecdotes about growing up cajun are fascinating and warmly sentimental.

The rich descriptions, atmosphere and cultural flavor coupled with a strong Clint Eastwood type of character make these stories winners. There is a sort of noir feel like the old Clint Eastwood movies.

Pegasus Descending got me interested but this book hooked me and made me a serious fan.

I highly recommend - especially if you like Michael Connelly's work.

I have read all 7 of these and can't wait for what she's got left up her sleeve! I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes action, mystery and lots of weird stuff in their reading. And let me just say, I want a Cleo too! She's awesome!

I love reading her books. I loved reading it then googling on what she has wrote to get more information so that I have a more clearer understanding. The history that she puts in her books are fantastic. Can't wait for the next one.

Great series. Worth reading if you like Atlantis and Fallen Angel legend themes

I love the entire Belial series so the comments are about the series. I think the quality of writing as been consistent. The writing is solid. The character development is good and the dialogue is believable. There are so many sci-fi/fantasy/mystery books by less known authors with very 2 dimensional characters with "B movie" dialogue. This series is not that.

The series starts out focus on the myth of Atlantis which intrigued me. Then it blends in and focuses on angels, nephilim, and other Biblical themes but as if they were real and had historical and rational explanations. However, it is not a religious book by any means.

It feels kind of Archaeology/Atlantis myth is real MEETS Dominion (Syfy)/Legion (Fallen Angels on earth) MEETS action heroine/special forces themes. And I love it all. I love that she returned to the Atlantis side of the story but expanded to Lemuria/Mu. I hope to read more and more but I suppose it will have to come to an end sometime.

About the Author

Robert L. Gould (Ph.D., University of California—San Diego) is a leader in the statistics education community. He has served as chair of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Teacher Enhancement, has served as chair of the ASA’s Statistics Education Section, and was a co-author of the Guidelines for Assessment in Instruction on Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report. As the associate director of professional development for CAUSE (Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education), he has worked closely with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) to provide traveling workshops and summer institutes in statistics (he also presented an AMATYC summer institute in 2009). For over ten years, he has served as Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at the UCLA Department of Statistics, and he is Director of the UCLA Center for the Teaching of Statistics. In 2012, Rob was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

 

Colleen N. Ryan has taught statistics, chemistry, and physics to diverse community college students for decades. She taught at Oxnard College from 1975 to 2006, where she earned the Teacher of the Year Award. Colleen currently teaches statistics part-time at California Lutheran University. She often designs her own lab activities. Her passion is to discover new ways to make statistical theory practical, easy to understand, and sometimes even fun. Colleen earned a B.A. in physics from Wellesley College, an M.A.T. in physics from Harvard University, and an M.A. in chemistry from Wellesley College. Her first exposure to statistics was with Frederick Mosteller at Harvard. In her spare time, she sings with the Oaks Chamber Singers, has been an avid skier in the past, and enjoys time with her family.

About the Author
Neil Seitz has been Dean of the School of Business and Administration at Saint Louis University since 1993. He received degrees from Findlay College, the University of Hawaii, and Ohio State University. Before entering academics, he worked briefly in inventory planning and then acquisition analysis. After teaching at Florida Atlantic University, he joined the finance faculty of Saint Louis University in 1975. He has published six books in a total of 11 English editions, plus one translation, and has published numerous articles as well. He has also consulted with and contributed to executive development programs for companies spanning the United States, Europe, South America, Australia, and Asia. His primary areas of academic interest are capital investment choice and the management of risk, such as foreign exchange risk, credit risk, and interest rate risk. His most recent book, Capital Budgeting and Long-Term Financing Decisions, 3d. ed., was published by Dryden Press in 1999. He currently serves on the boards of Magna Investment Funds and Inroads. He also serves on the advisory boards for the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Rosati-Kain High School. He serves as chairman of the oversight committee for the Beijing Program of the Association of Jesuit Business Schools.

Mitch Ellison is the Dean of the Business School at Quincy University. In addition, he has teaching responsibilities within the school as a Professor of Finance and Accounting. He earned his Ph. D. in Finance from Saint Louis University. Mitch is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant and is Certified in Financial Management. He has extensive experience in merger and acquisition analysis acting as an independent analyst for over twenty consummated or initiated deals. Mitch serves as consultant in strategic planning, executive compensation, and in various SEC and FASB implementation issues. Additionally, he is co-author of Capital Budgeting and Long Term Financial Decisions, Third Edition, with Neil Seitz as primary author.

I felt that this textbook which was used for one of my mba classes was confusing. There are mistakes and typos which are unacceptable in a finance text. The cases do not get directly to the point, and add distracting information to make the case seem more 'real,' but instead it is just unclear. The explanations and examples are not explained well.

A Classic and Must Have

This book explains very well the diffrent concepts and techniques used in capital budgeting such as Divident, risk-adjusted cash flow analysis, WACC calculations, and an introduction to Linear programing. However, it does not provide a very advanced analysis of the techniques. The book shows you how to use them, the different assumptions behind each technique, advantage and disadvantage, but does not explain how to apply the techniques in very complexe situations. Overall, it is a classic in terms of content and the number of topics cavered.

It is as advertised nothing wrong with the textbook, and it came on time. The textbook had some marks inside but that is acceptable since some marks helped with the studying.
