Perfect Summer Read

Whew! That was the sound I made after finishing this read. Elle Wright has penned a wonderful romance with Sydney Williams. Sydney has gone the extra mile for love and is on the other side of through!

The story grips you from the first page as readers develop immediate disdain toward Sydney's fiancé, Den. What could have been a familiar, drama filled story becomes magic in the hands of Wright. She fleshes out each character, gives just enough backstory to understand the choices each person makes, and creates a measure of empathy for everyone's journey. It is fast-paced and will have you wondering where the Morgan is in your life.

This read is highly recommended and I look forward to the sequel.

Could Very Well Happen

First, I would definitely recommend this book to readers. Let me introduce you to all of the players involved. There are the Smith Boys (Caden, Morgan and Kent), the Williams Siblings (Jared and Sydney) and their friends (Calisa and Allina). This is not your run-of-the-mill type of romance novel. This isn't, boy meets girl, they fall in love, complications arise, they work it out... there is so much more. This is a true love triangle that could break down relationships all around. I don't want to give away too much of the story, but let me give you the dynamics. Caden and Sydney are engaged until he cheats. Knowing that he has messed up, again, he is doing everything to fight for her love. While defending his brother and trying to have his back, Morgan secretly withholds his feelings for Sydney. Here's the problem, this didn't just happen. They all practically grew up together. Things happen, and Sydney and Morgan find themselves in a predicament; they have to hide it from their family and friends or it could implode the very foundation on which they stand.

A must-have book and fun to read, too

Hmmm... A person who has been successfully married for a long time and has known her husband for 10 years before tying the knot, supposedly picks up this book, realizes it doesn't offer her anything, and then gives it a negative review? Hello. Talk about a complete disconnect, and a wholly unfair review.

This is a book for people who really need to think about what kind of changes married life will bring -- it's not for people who have known each other since childhood and grew up together (see below), but as grown-ups who come with perhaps unknown sets of values, goals, expectations, families, in-laws, problems, and vision.

For people who take the institution of marriage seriously and need to want to look past the butterflies and flowers of love and engagement to what it means to be really married, warts, mothers-in-law, unemployment, child-rearing exhaustion, nursing homes, affairs, as well as the good times (LOL). The author has really thought through life's possibilities exhaustively..I'd give this to anyone who is marriage-minded. Even if you've met "the one," sometimes it's better to know up front what you're dealing with and face it head on than find out later.

Worth the Money, even for us Know-It-Alls

This book is FANTASTIC and I buy a copy for any friend who is thinking about getting engaged. Some folks complained this book has logical basic questions you should know about your spouse before agreeing to walk down the aisle - but that's exactly the point! I really do think far too many people getting married nowadays assume once they know the very basics (Do you want kids? Do you want to be rich? Will we share a bank account?) and they love the person, they're set! I think the "logical" things aren't all that common anymore and there is nothing to hurt in prepping yourself and your future spouse as much as possible beforehand - you WANT to stay together right? So take some time and go through this. My fiancé and I sat around, going through the questions together, a few day while lounging about after work - it's not hard and can even be fun. We knew far more than it seems many couples knew going into the book, but still found good topics to cover! And we've been happily married for six years.

This book walks couples through a lot of the LOGICAL (sorry, no, they're not all fun and whimsy - but fun and whimsy doesn't build a marriage, those are the perks!), solid questions you should cover before committing your life to someone. Beyond having kids, it walks through what you might each do in a situation during their upbringing. On finances, you go from basics about banking to taxes to how to handle situations regarding layoffs and other woes. From defining each version of "cheating" (this really does vary person to person, oddly enough, as so many couples forget about lines coworkers may try to cross or emotional cheating), etc.

If you can't sit down and go through this book with the person you plan to marry because you find it boring or the questions obsolete - frankly, you probably shouldn't be getting married. You'll only gain healthy insight and good, open discussions on any possible disagreements - no losses, here. And if you make it to the very end of the book and find that you gained nothing new and had already come to agreement on every single question posed, then be GLAD you were able to spend $10 to find out that you really DO know what you're in for.

Very Good Resource!!

I was happy to find this book with an abundance of dictation exercises for my AP Music Theory Class. Ordered in level of difficulty, this book provides so many harmonic and melodic examples that you could do 5 each class and not run out before the year is over. I highly recommend this book for any public school theory teacher who teacher any class from a basic theory class to AP Music Theory. Considering the prices charged for books like this one considered education textbooks, the price on this was a steal!!!!

Perhaps the Key Illustration of the Kaplan and Norton Series

This offering is the 3rd and one of the most valuable, perhaps the key to Kaplan and Norton’s five book series on how the “Balanced Scorecard” can be used to develop a “Strategy Focused Organization” through “Strategy Maps” to achieve “Alignment” and the “Execution Premium.”

The reason this reviewer considers Strategy Maps so valuable is that it so fully exposes this truly dynamic visual tool for describing and communicating an organization’s strategy. While all the books in the series have charts and figures this one has the most by far, 120 within its 438 pages.

The book’s part 1 indicates different ways an organization can create value addressing customer, financial, internal along with learning and growth perspectives. Chapters show customer intimacy, product innovation, operational excellence, and standard platform pathways can be pursued. True to its subtitle, part 2 depicts the manner in which intangible assets including human capital, information technology, and organizational capabilities can be defined, described, measured and linked to value creation. Part 3 and 4 are devoted to giving instances and cases relating the building of strategies and strategy maps just as throughout the previous two sections (both business and non-profit/public examples are provided).

This book clearly depicts the idea of strategy as hypothesis (e.g. the importance of choosing a particular set of capabilities in which to excel as proposed by Michael Porter). One can see the way these “strategy trees” lay out the logic of a business like a McKinsey “decision tree” presents determinations to be made or a Minto Pyramid arranges the supporting elements of an argument. For example, a strategy map on page 314 conveys the case of Ingersoll-Rand (with whom this writer has had some involvement) pictorially representing the then new “customer intimacy” strategy (e.g. like those described by Wiersma and Treacy). That map indicates important areas of financial performance (e.g. accelerate organic growth) and the customer experiences to be emphasized (e.g. provide the best solutions) as well as process excellence (e.g. drive growth through innovation) and people expertise (e.g. leverage cross-business synergies) that will be required to support that achievement.

If the reader needs an explanation of the origins and fundamentals select Kaplan and Norton’s first book, “The Balanced Scorecard.” As one is seeking an overall approach description, choose their second book, “The Strategy Focused Organization.” When looking for a way to devise an enterprise strategy map and cascade that through the portfolio of business units and functions consider the fourth book, “Alignment.” For those at the point of bringing strategy and operations together in a continuous process for strategy management go with the fifth book, “The Execution Premium.”

But if you are concerned with illustrating an organization’s strategy as well as the links and interactions necessary to “bring it to life” pick up “Strategy Maps.”

Strategy, Alignment, Communication, Clarity

One of my earlier bosses required that any idea, process, program, etc. be presented using both words and graphics. He wouldn't review anything that didn't have a picture showing the process or relationships of ideas. So I tend to be an Excel spreadsheet, data kind of person although I really think I need to give this up (laugh)....drawing a picture isn't my strong suit, at least not then. Other reviewers have commented on strengths. I really like this book in the way we are called to imagine our organizations relationally via a graphic (strategy map). I learned that my bosses demand for a picture was because the process of taking words and creating an image required a person to really think through the coherence, relationship, and logic of their ideas. Words in combination with graphics can tell a story that taps into people's imaginations and speaks to differing learning preferences (auditory versus visual). I like this book because it provides a framework for systematically understanding your organization and the relational aspects of how things fit together ultimately in support of your mission.

A must read on Christian mission and ethics!

How should the church relate to society? Two models seem to predominate. One is accommodation. Some churches seem either to completely withdraw from society or be so accommodated to culture that they have little influence. The other model is full scale transformation of society according to some perceived biblical imperative ... taking expression in everything from the Religious Right to Christian Progressivism to liberation theology.

Stackhouse offers us a brilliantly articulated alternative he calls Christian Realism although it is nuanced some from what has passed as Christian Realism in the past. Stackhouse walks us through the story of God's mission in the world, identifying four commandments. Two are creation mandates. There is the cultural mandate to make the best world we can ("make the best of it") and the mandate of the great commandments to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. There are also the redemption mandates. We are given a "New Commandment" to love one another as Christ has loved as ... thus giving witness to the world of God's love and vision of Kingdom community ... and the Great Commission to seek out others and bring them into community. The overarching principle is the pursuit of the greatest shalom possible in the world (in all the richness the term "shalom" conveys.)

But here lies the problem. We can never fully achieve shalom this side of the consummation of the Kingdom of God. Sin is with us until then. Furthermore, due to our sin and finite existence, there is considerable doubt that we ... individually or corporately ... can fully grasp what pursing shalom truly entails in our context. Ambiguity and paradox are ever present companions. It creates a powerful tension. Unfortunately, we all too often try to escape the tension through accommodation or through idealistic transformational crusades. (Some offer Anabaptism as an alternative but that tradition also fails ... as Stackhouse shows ... to successfully address the paradox. There is recurring respectful dialog with Yoder in the book.) So how to respond?

Stackhouse begins the book looking back. The first half of the book revisits H. Richard Neibuhr's "Christ and Culture" and then explores the Christian Realism of C. S. Lewis, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Unfortunately, many are ready to tune him out here ... especially emerging church folks ... , believing that John Howard Yoder has thoroughly discredited Niebuhr. Stackhouse is not calling for a revival of Niebuhr's work but also takes issue with how Yoder has critique of Niebuhr. Furthermore, Stackhouse notes that all these Christian Realists were seriously lacking in a Trinitarian perspective, the work of the Spirit, and the role of worshiping communities in transforming the world. The first half of the book is more about identifying themes from the past to inform us in our exploration of the issues.

The second half of the book is where Stackhouse articulates his view of Christian Realism and it is largely disconnected from the first half in any direct sense. The two halves could be read as separate books but together they give a completeness that is needed. I've already mentioned the four commandments. Stackhouse also draws on the idea of Scripture, tradition, reason and experience working together... through the guidance of the Spirit ... to lead us as we pursue shalom. I particularly like how he roots his ethics in the narrative of Scripture and God's mission in the world.

This is an exceptional book! It is easily one of the most important books I've read on Christian mission and ethics. It articulates many conclusions I've come to on my own, clarifies so many other issues that I've struggled with, and presents it all in a cogent engaging style. I can't recommend the book highly enough.

Great Book!

This is a great read for anyone who is interested in the question of what it means to think and act Christianly in the cultural context in which they find themselves. There are at least three important benefits to be derived from reading this book: 1) You will learn a good deal about three flat-out interesting Christians--Reinhold Niebuhr, C.S. Lewis, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer--and how they understood and practiced following Christ in their very different contexts; 2) You will get a compelling portrayal of the scope and contours of the Biblical story and how human culture contributes to and detracts from God's intentions for is world; and 3) You will receive an extremely cogent and compelling articulation of Christian discipleship that combines an appreciation of the complexity of the historical and cultural contexts in which Christians are located with the conviction that the way of Jesus really does represent the most God-honouring way to be a human being in any and all cultures.

Well worth the read!

A Nuanced, Reasonable Take on Christianity's Relation to Culture

This is a book about how Christianity ought to relate to culture. Stackhouse does a good job of outlining and describing Richard Niebuhr's typology of various paradigms of relating to culture which I found fascinating. To state is quickly, there is the type of Christ against culture (think of Nazism or abortion), Christ of culture (think of "Christian America," or previously, Christian Romans of the 4th and 5th centuries), Christ above culture (think of Thomas Aquinas both affirming that Christ is both in a separate from culture), Christ transforming culture (Moral Majority, Prohibition, etc.), and lastly Christ in paradox with culture which is the view Stackhouse defends and also the view that is the most complex. I definitely see the merits of Stackhouse's position even if I am somewhat inclined towards the 'Christ above culture' option.

In the next section, Stackhouse describes three influential Christian men, C.S. Lewis, Reinhold Niebuhr and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. For me, this was the most interesting part of the book as I did not know too much about the later two figures. Bonhoeffer especially struck a cord with me in that he had a fierce spirit but recognized the intellectual difficulties with relating Christianity to culture that the other two didn't address as well.

Part 3 was all Stackhouse and this part got tiresome to read after a while. I generally liked the author's thinking and agreed with him over and against his opponents but I generally found his conclusions to be uninspiring. Just on the mechanics of the reading, I think the author repeated himself far too much and provided obvious, and unnecessary qualifications to his statements. For example, the word "shalom" is used so many times and always in italics to let you know the author is saying something special, that I grew increasingly annoyed. Yes, Christians are suppose to pursue the peace of God, goodness and all that but saying it over and over again gets grating. He also spent a lot of time qualifying his remarks which had the effect of making his statements more reasonable, which is a good thing, but also ensuring that he isn't really saying all that much. Nothing was bold, nothing surprised. It was all just very reasonable. Vanilla-like. This criticism sounds harsh, I know, so I'll speak next about what I did enjoy about this book.

I did like the author's nuanced approach to Scripture. He had a refreshingly non-dogmatic view about taking the NT in its context with the knowledge that we live in a different context with all the consequent ambiguities. Thus, while it might sound like the author's reasonableness is a liability when it comes to inspiring a person, it is an asset when it comes to intellectually defending to oneself Christianity's general rationality. For this I thank Stackhouse.

Overall, this book was mixed. It definitely wasn't bad but wasn't great either. It has strong and weak points.
