This study was done without the now available help of the modern Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System - Helms and collaborators are presenting here a fascinating account with numerous drawings, hypothesis - possible explanation of the life-support systems with details of (the possible) material requirement and labour-time to build and maintain the water harvesting structures at Jawa in the black basalt desert of North-Eastern present Jordan- a unique contribution to understanding how water harvesting techniques work in the desert ! a "must read" for all people working these days on water harvesting techniques and desert development.

Absolutely the best book on lean for service

This is hands-down the best book on lean for service that I've ever read. There are four parts to the book. The first section is a very high-level overview of what lean is about and how it relates to other systems-oriented concepts. Next, it provides a very comprehensive (and well cited) overview of the major lean ideas and explains how they apply to service. Third, it gives a very detailed explanation of how to map out the processes used in services and explains the underlying reasons for the differences from manufacturing lean. Finally, it explains the most important lean tools.

Unlike this book, most of the lean books out there are written from a manufacturing perspective. And even books that deal with office lean are focused more on office tasks in a support role instead of service as the product. None of those books come close to this one in terms of depth or breadth of coverage. It is easily the best book on actually applying lean ideas to anything outside of a factory context. I highly recommend it.

Also, note that although Amazon doesn't say so, this is the second edition of The Lean Toolbox for Service Systems. So don't buy both books thinking they are different.

Disjointed, but kids will love it

For those who are new to the Eyewitness format, it consists of thematically arranged two-page spreads of brilliant photographs on a white background. There is an intro paragraph in the upper left-hand corner, but most of the text is in the captions that go with the photographs. Generally, the biological sciences titles are the strongest in this series, since other topics often need a more organized progression of topics. You'll get a lot of information out of these books, but you won't get a systematic anaylsis.

This is a decent addition to the series. The information is rather dated, and this entry particularly suffers from the bite-sized, disconnected spreads that are arranged thematically rather than progressively or chronologically. However, the spreads themselves have a very high "cool" factor and are interesting and are coherent within themselves. Though practical use is limited, any child who loves spies or James Bond will adore this book.

Three hopeful stories on the end of the world

Triffids is still a great read. Kraken is a bit dated but I'd never read it before. Crysalids is good but slows a bit in the middle. All three reward the reader with plenty to think about, especially regarding apocalyptic weapons which were only just being invented when the stories were published, but are still very much with us.
