This book is frustrating.

I have this book for a textbook. I have completed every assignment up to section 6 so far. This is the most frustrating textbook I've ever had. Here's why:

Screenshots in book often don't help, for the website now is changed. And you know how greyed out links on the internet means "if you click here nothing will happen, this link is dead"? Well, greyed out links work on this site, sometimes. Sometimes they don't.

The book will tell you to go to a web page that's actually a tab, or a button, or a list. It calls down-arrows links. It says to "clear a selection" when it means "uncheck a box". It often pointlessly uses a m paragraph to tell you "don't bother clicking anything, just click ok".

And if you skin over a pointless-looking paragraph, there will be some small three crucial words buried in it.

You have to type in url's. And it gives you the long and/or complicated ones that must be carefully typed out--the weird character kind with percents, numbers, random capitalized letters mixed with random small letters, and such. Complicating this, the book is printed in a font where you often can't tell "one (1)" from "little L (l)". Most links have multiples of each in it.

I just completed section 5 and two URL bit.ly links did not work--no matter how many times I retyped them with differing 1's and l's.

Sexy Story, Alpha Hero

"Gaia had never been spoken to so coldly or so harshly, and despite the precariousness of her situation, it took every effort of will on her part not to reply in kind. Who the hell did this man this he was?"

THE STORY: Gregori Markovic is known as the head of the Russian side of the London criminal underwood. Gaia Miller has gotten a job in his club to find out if he might be responsible for her half-sister's death. Gregori knows from the moment that he meets her that she is up to something. He also knows that he wants her. Danger surrounds them both as old enemies return.

OPINION: There is much to like in this novel. Gregori and Gaia have an intense relationship. I liked this book. For its genre, it is a good book. It is not a deep book but it has an interesting story and some good characters. I liked the action in the story and the relationship. I thought that the characters have similar strong willed demanding personalities that match one another well.

WORTH MENTIONING: For fans of Dair and Kat from SHADOW ALPHA, they make an appearance here.

FINAL DECISION: This was a good story and similar in tone and structure to the others in the series. I enjoyed the interaction between Gregori and Gaia especially with their contentious relationship.

CONNECTED BOOKS: MIDNIGHT ALPHA is the fourth book in the ALPHA series. This book can be read as a standalone but is closely connected with the third book in the series, SHADOW ALPHA, and is better read after that book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Sexy Dialogue

This my favourite book of the alpha series. They are all good, but, this is the best one.

Gaia starts working at a club that Gregori owns. Gaia stepsister had died of a drug overdose. She thinks she was murdered by someone at the club. The opening scene finds Gaia underneath Gregori desk looking for evidence. He walks in and wants to know what she is doing and the fun begins. Both the hero and heroine are great. Sexy dialogue and great sex scenes.
Definitely worth it!

"Midnight Alpha" by Carole Mortimer is a suspenseful thriller. I usually don't read thrillers but this book was very enjoyable. It made my heart race, and I didn't want to put it down. We have Gregori Markovic who is head honcho in the Russian side of the London mafia, and Gaia Miller who got a job at his club because she's investigating the death of her sister. The chemistry between these two is amazing despite the fact that each of them are strong minded individuals.

Excellent and Unique book on system operations and smart grid

The book provides excellent coverage for various areas of utilities business operations and associated technologies. The author has done a fantastic job of explaining the complex engineering topics from a business perspective and also providing sufficient technical details.

The uniqueness of the book is that it explains the complex relationship between engineering side of the grid and the commercial aspects of the markets (for example - see RTO and Markets interaction with an EMS, commercial operations in a system operator, etc. ) The Chapter "Impact of Deregulation on System Operations" provides deep insight into system operations and markets; I have not seen any other book covering this crucial topic.

I hope the electronic version of this book is available soon, so it can be a handy reference.

Author Vadari, begins with a brief discussion on a set of power system fundamentals that are important to the proper understanding of how a utility grid actually operates/works. Next, the author focuses on the T&D in general and system operations in specific; as well as, a few key functions in a utility that tend to stand out whether they are at the enterprise level, enabling level, or at the core functionality level. In addition, he defines the control center, which in many ways is the hallmark of system operations. The author also analyzes EMS from the following perspective: How an EMS is used to support the mandate of the system operator by different users; key components of the EMS--hardware, software, databases, user interface, and power system modeling; EMS application suites--SCDA, network applications, generation applications, modeling applications, system utilities (alarms, process manager, and other tools), and WAMS; and, other tools in the transmission control center. Then, he continues with a description of DMS systems. The author then covers the futuristic distributed energy management system, mainly because this system as specified, does not yet exist, but will fulfill a niche that the industry really needs. Next, he states that one should not assume that a single training simulator exists to train operators all the way from transmission to distribution. Finally, he concludes by looking at systems operations from an entirely different perspective; and, what is coming next on the horizon.

This most excellent book discusses several powerful algorithms such as power flow; optimal power flow; three-phase unbalanced power flow; contingency analysis; and, so forth. In addition, the material in this great book is organized in such a way, that it brings the reader into the area of system operations by opening one door at a time.

Instead, there are vague qualitative assertions presented in an average engineering writing style. I give it two stars because the accuracy of the descriptive content that's there is OK as far as it goes, and because I don't like troll reviews. If you are new to electrical systems, you might get something out of it. But even then, at $99 a copy, you can find something as good or better for far less money.
