ADI DA's FOURTH BOOK, OF HIS "CRAZY WISDOM" PHASE

Adi Da Samraj (1939-2008) was born Franklin Albert Jones, but was also known as Bubba Free John, Da Free John, Da Love-Ananda, etc., until from 1991 until his death he settled on Adi Da Love-Ananda Samraj [or just "Adi Da"]. He became a famous and controversial spiritual teacher beginning in the 1970s counterculture. His movement has been criticized as cultic, abusive, etc., although his followers remain devoted to him, and often live in one of his five "Adidam" churches (including his main one on an island in Fiji). He wrote many books, including The Method of the Siddhas,, Four Fundamental Questions, Aham Da Asmi (Beloved, I Am Da), Ruchira Avatara Gita: The Avataric Way of the Divine Heart-Master, Da Love-Ananda Gita: The Free Avataric Gift of the Divine Love-Bliss, Hridaya Rosary: Four Thorns of Heart-Instruction, Eleutherios (The Only Truth That Sets The Heart Free), and his autobiography, The knee of listening [revised as The Knee Of Listening: The Divine Ordeal of the Avataric Incarnation of Conscious Light].

He says, "You are not going to heaven from here. You are going to die: literally and absolutely. Not just a little bit. It is not just your body that is going to die. YOU are going to die, and that is the truth. All of those consoling philosophies try to make you assume that only your body is going to die, and somehow you, the same as you are now, are going to pop out and zap around in some wilderness of light. That is absolutely not going to happen. You are going to DIE. So you must realize, during life, that real and prior Condition of existence which is always already transcending psycho-physical life..." (Pg. 12-13)

He states, "the cult of marriage is a principal obstacle in the affair of the spiritual Commuity, because the common theatre of marriage is a fundamental instrument for locking out the life-energy, the ecstatic life-communication, from other beings." (Pg. 31) He adds, "At times alcohol and the common social forms of celebration serve to break down the illusory time-space separation between these two dimensions. There have been a number of occasions when, because I had been drinking, my subtle presence and the presence of others on the subtler dimension began to become visible to others who were in the room." (Pg. 90-91)

But in a few months, "By the middle of May several months of extravagant eating and drinking had begun to take their toll on health... Bubba returned from a short visit to San Francisco and declared a number of changes in the Ashram's present style of life. Everyone would resume a straight lacto-vegetarian diet the following Monday, and fast for seven to ten days a week later. Bubba said that he intended us to continue this phase of Ashram life until early July, a period of about six weeks. That same day Bubba told Sal and Neil to move out of his house, and back to their wives. So everyone began to prepare for the new regime, after what seemed like months of continual partying. Even so, that weekend Bubba held the most uproarious extended party this Ashram has ever enjoyed." (Pg. 135)

He told a devotee, "So the Guru's perfect function is to undermine all this, to make the world show itself. He makes the Goddess pull down her pants, and then you see her a_____e.... Let her face you with her b____ts falling out... The Goddess used to say, 'Yield to me,' and I f____d her brains loose. I've never listened to anyone. Perhaps I should have!" (Pg. 106-107) Then, "Bubba began to ask certain women to move into his household. Eventually, all of them performed practical functions in the community, but their primary function was that of 'gopi,' or one who adores the Lord in human form, and this was something new to the Ashram." (Pg. 134)

He explains, "I will not remain personally in contact with the Community or any devotee after my death... I will remain only Perfectly Present... Therefore, what will remain behind me will be a Community, not a cult. The Divine will remain immediately and directly Present through the agency of my total Community of devotees. Among all future devotees I may be acknowledged as Teacher.... and recollected along with the body of Teaching. But no cultic relationship to my possibly continued personal presence after death will be necessary or appropriate in order for devotees to enjoy the Siddhi and Person of the Divine which will always remain in the Satsang of the Community." (Pg. 206) He admits, "the Guru has no sense of identification even with his present life. I have no more sense of identity with Franklin Jones or Bubba Free John than any of you does. I have the same sense of identity with all of you that I have with Bubba Free John." (Pg. 292)

He asserts, "But people want the Guru to be the Avatar. They want that exclusive God image, whereas God doesn't exist in the exclusive sense... Outwardly, this Community appears like any other. There is no reason why you should think it has to look extraordinary. Be ordinary, be happy. Don't worry about all that b______t. Live sadhana." (Pg. 336) He adds, "When I say my work to reveal the Teaching is complete, I mean that I will no longer serve the child or the adolescent in those who come to me. Those who would approach me must come to me through my Ashram, my Community of Devotees." (Pg. 346-347) Furthermore, "I still live in the Ashram. I come and sit in Satsang. I talk. I see people. A certain dimension of theatre of being present as an object for disciples must be maintained, at least for now. But fundamentally, my work is now of that third or perfect kind. I am waiting for devotees. And when they come I live with them in Truth." (Pg. 357)

Adi Da is somewhat of an "acquired taste," and he definitely doesn't appeal to everyone. Still, his earliest books (such as this one, "Method of the Siddhas," "The Knee of Listening," etc.) are perhaps of more interest to the average "seeker" than his later ones.

The Heart Exceeds the Goddess (and the Garbage)

This is a most lively account of an enlightened, wild, free man penetrating the emotional hang-ups of his followers. Breath-takingly fresh, penetratingly honest, this book gives a glimpse into the ashram of a magnificent spiritual teacher, and one of the most controversial. After reading this book, I read the others and set upon to meet and encounter this God-Man myself, and well, my garbage and fascinations were trashed... hooray!

he put goddess over his knee until she cried like the mother of god

Grotesquely funny, sexually dirty and horrifying! In His third book, readers are confronted with an excruciatingly detailed glimpse of a loved up, sex inducing cult leader and His cataclysmic and devastating climax as the seal of the eternal Avatars.

In other words, this is a jaw dropping, wollopingly sick read!!! It is a product of its time, you see, and should be treated as such. Those days must have been great fun! The USA tried to be like Vedic India but psycho's exploited the movement because we moderns are not mature enough for the Spirit, so Adi Da took advantage along with the rest.

People scratch their hollow sculls wondering how Adi Da managed to brain wash all those people? These people know nothing of the workings of man, Adi Da did, this is the difference between them and He.

Terence McKenna says somewhere that culture is a cult and so all that is needed for a guy to take advantage is to control the cultural momentum. If one is clever enough and evil enough. Franklin Jones was one such verisimilitude of evil. He was the evil Terence McKenna. McKenna refused to anoint himself divine, Adi Da wouldn't let that sort of modesty get in His way.

Utterly ruined by terrible narration

I like Conan Doyle's novellas much better than his short stories, and The Valley of Fear is one I've never read before. So I really, really want to listen to this book. However, I just cannot endure John Bolen's terrible narration. I made it through the first CD and can go no further. His style is so overly dramatic and exaggerated as to be completely unrealistic, annoying in the extreme, and nearly impossible to follow. He utterly ruins this book.

My experience with audio books is that Tantor Media doesn't use top-notch narrators; even so, this is possibly one of the very worst audio book narrations I have ever been unable to endure.

I found that my library has another audio version, narrated by someone else I know is good, so I will give that a try.

Murder Mystery Based on Historical Events

The Valley of Fear

In Chapter 1 Sherlock Holmes receives a coded message from an informant and deciphers is without the cipher key. Inspector Alec MacDonald of Scotland Yard arrives to say that Mr. Douglas was horribly murdered last night, verifying that message. Holmes draws MacDonald’s attention to a painting, and what it reveals. They will go to Birlstone to investigate the murder. Watson describes the location of Birlstone Manor House, which is surrounded by a moat forty feet in breadth. The drawbridge was raised in the evening, isolating the house. John Douglas and his wife were strangers but were popular in the village. Douglas was an excellent tenor, they said he found gold in California. He was democratic in manner and indifferent to danger. Douglas had one close friend, Cecil James Barker, who knew him in America. The servants were not involved. The victim had his face blown to pieces by a sawed off shotgun, a weapon that came from America. A card beside the body said “V.V. 341". There is a strange brand on the forearm to identify Douglas. His wedding ring was missing!

The story tells of the investigation by the police and Sherlock Holmes. Is there a clue missing? The people and servants are interviewed to get their statements (Chapter 5). Part 2 has the story about John Douglas and the enemies who want him dead. This story is a lesson about drawing the right conclusion from circumstantial evidence so all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

Part 2 is a fictionalized account of the labor wars that occurred in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania in the mid 1870s. The laborers had gone on a long strike for better conditions, it was lost by the miners. There had been violence during the strike. Afterwards the mine owners sought to ruthlessly oppress the coal miners by the use of secret agents. One infiltrated the miner’s secret society and reported their doings. Some believe there were others who provoked violence and the revenge that followed. This secret society was called the “Molly Maguires”, although this phrase was never used by the miners themselves. About two dozen were hanged for their murders. In 1979 Pennsylvania declared a full pardon for Jack Kehoe, “the King of the Mollies”, who was sentenced to death after a farce of a trial. The president of the Reading Railroad was the Prosecutor! Government was used as a tool of business. 1876 saw the worst depression known at that time. Another depression saw that Reading Railroad president voted out of office and later die a suicide, not a victim of murder. A good history book will educate you about this dramatic history.

Note how this story mirrors “A Study in Scarlet”. Part 2 provides a historical background for the mystery in Part 1, which is about the identity of a secret agent, not a murderer. The real history of the Anthracite Wars in northeast Pennsylvania is even more interesting than this fiction. “Sherlock Holmes Detected” has essays on the four long stories. Why did no one notice the lack of a mark from the wedding ring?

A Novel Approach to Monroe

S. Paige Baty's American Monroe is one of the most riveting academic books on popular culture I have ever read. The author does an excellent job of explaining how the star has functioned as an icon of popular memory over the past three and a half decades, exploring her image from cultural, historical, and political angles.
She explains that the "real" story began once Monroe died, in so much as her corpse provided the ground for recent history (Hollywood, Presidential politics, feminism) to be written. If you're looking for an ordinary biography of Marilyn, or a typical rendering of her place in history, don't look here. But if you'd like to gain a critical or philosophical perspective on the star, buy this book! Now!
Of particular interest is Baty's take on mass media, virtual communities bound by the internet, and a re-thinking of the way American citizens cast our vote in the democratic process.

That is thought provoking, steamy, sensual, gripping,romantic. I haven’t felt this way about a debut novel since ‘Please Please Please by Renee Swindle.’ This novel is written very well and it will draw you into every single character, especially MORGAN. #WeWantMorgan #TeamMorgan

The Forbidden Man by Elle Wright“She wrapped her arms tightly around tightly around his neck as he continued to assault her senses with his kisses. He slid his tongue across her bottom lip, demanding entrance, which she happily granted. She gripped a fistful of his hair as he pulled her onto hip lap. Perfect Summer Read

Whew! That was the sound I made after finishing this read. Elle Wright has penned a wonderful romance with Sydney Williams. Sydney has gone the extra mile for love and is on the other side of through!

The story grips you from the first page as readers develop immediate disdain toward Sydney's fiancé, Den. What could have been a familiar, drama filled story becomes magic in the hands of Wright. She fleshes out each character, gives just enough backstory to understand the choices each person makes, and creates a measure of empathy for everyone's journey. It is fast-paced and will have you wondering where the Morgan is in your life.

This read is highly recommended and I look forward to the sequel.

Could Very Well Happen

First, I would definitely recommend this book to readers. Let me introduce you to all of the players involved. There are the Smith Boys (Caden, Morgan and Kent), the Williams Siblings (Jared and Sydney) and their friends (Calisa and Allina). This is not your run-of-the-mill type of romance novel. This isn't, boy meets girl, they fall in love, complications arise, they work it out... there is so much more. This is a true love triangle that could break down relationships all around. I don't want to give away too much of the story, but let me give you the dynamics. Caden and Sydney are engaged until he cheats. Knowing that he has messed up, again, he is doing everything to fight for her love. While defending his brother and trying to have his back, Morgan secretly withholds his feelings for Sydney. Here's the problem, this didn't just happen. They all practically grew up together. Things happen, and Sydney and Morgan find themselves in a predicament; they have to hide it from their family and friends or it could implode the very foundation on which they stand.

A must-have book and fun to read, too

Hmmm... A person who has been successfully married for a long time and has known her husband for 10 years before tying the knot, supposedly picks up this book, realizes it doesn't offer her anything, and then gives it a negative review? Hello. Talk about a complete disconnect, and a wholly unfair review.

This is a book for people who really need to think about what kind of changes married life will bring -- it's not for people who have known each other since childhood and grew up together (see below), but as grown-ups who come with perhaps unknown sets of values, goals, expectations, families, in-laws, problems, and vision.

For people who take the institution of marriage seriously and need to want to look past the butterflies and flowers of love and engagement to what it means to be really married, warts, mothers-in-law, unemployment, child-rearing exhaustion, nursing homes, affairs, as well as the good times (LOL). The author has really thought through life's possibilities exhaustively..I'd give this to anyone who is marriage-minded. Even if you've met "the one," sometimes it's better to know up front what you're dealing with and face it head on than find out later.

My girlfriend recomended that we fill out this book together. We did and it saved me a second divorce. It has questions you wouldnt think of asking untill too late. Highly recomended.

Worth the Money, even for us Know-It-Alls

This book is FANTASTIC and I buy a copy for any friend who is thinking about getting engaged. Some folks complained this book has logical basic questions you should know about your spouse before agreeing to walk down the aisle - but that's exactly the point! I really do think far too many people getting married nowadays assume once they know the very basics (Do you want kids? Do you want to be rich? Will we share a bank account?) and they love the person, they're set! I think the "logical" things aren't all that common anymore and there is nothing to hurt in prepping yourself and your future spouse as much as possible beforehand - you WANT to stay together right? So take some time and go through this. My fiancé and I sat around, going through the questions together, a few day while lounging about after work - it's not hard and can even be fun. We knew far more than it seems many couples knew going into the book, but still found good topics to cover! And we've been happily married for six years.

This book walks couples through a lot of the LOGICAL (sorry, no, they're not all fun and whimsy - but fun and whimsy doesn't build a marriage, those are the perks!), solid questions you should cover before committing your life to someone. Beyond having kids, it walks through what you might each do in a situation during their upbringing. On finances, you go from basics about banking to taxes to how to handle situations regarding layoffs and other woes. From defining each version of "cheating" (this really does vary person to person, oddly enough, as so many couples forget about lines coworkers may try to cross or emotional cheating), etc.

If you can't sit down and go through this book with the person you plan to marry because you find it boring or the questions obsolete - frankly, you probably shouldn't be getting married. You'll only gain healthy insight and good, open discussions on any possible disagreements - no losses, here. And if you make it to the very end of the book and find that you gained nothing new and had already come to agreement on every single question posed, then be GLAD you were able to spend $10 to find out that you really DO know what you're in for.

Very Good Resource!!

I was happy to find this book with an abundance of dictation exercises for my AP Music Theory Class. Ordered in level of difficulty, this book provides so many harmonic and melodic examples that you could do 5 each class and not run out before the year is over. I highly recommend this book for any public school theory teacher who teacher any class from a basic theory class to AP Music Theory. Considering the prices charged for books like this one considered education textbooks, the price on this was a steal!!!!

Perhaps the Key Illustration of the Kaplan and Norton Series

This offering is the 3rd and one of the most valuable, perhaps the key to Kaplan and Norton’s five book series on how the “Balanced Scorecard” can be used to develop a “Strategy Focused Organization” through “Strategy Maps” to achieve “Alignment” and the “Execution Premium.”

The reason this reviewer considers Strategy Maps so valuable is that it so fully exposes this truly dynamic visual tool for describing and communicating an organization’s strategy. While all the books in the series have charts and figures this one has the most by far, 120 within its 438 pages.

The book’s part 1 indicates different ways an organization can create value addressing customer, financial, internal along with learning and growth perspectives. Chapters show customer intimacy, product innovation, operational excellence, and standard platform pathways can be pursued. True to its subtitle, part 2 depicts the manner in which intangible assets including human capital, information technology, and organizational capabilities can be defined, described, measured and linked to value creation. Part 3 and 4 are devoted to giving instances and cases relating the building of strategies and strategy maps just as throughout the previous two sections (both business and non-profit/public examples are provided).

This book clearly depicts the idea of strategy as hypothesis (e.g. the importance of choosing a particular set of capabilities in which to excel as proposed by Michael Porter). One can see the way these “strategy trees” lay out the logic of a business like a McKinsey “decision tree” presents determinations to be made or a Minto Pyramid arranges the supporting elements of an argument. For example, a strategy map on page 314 conveys the case of Ingersoll-Rand (with whom this writer has had some involvement) pictorially representing the then new “customer intimacy” strategy (e.g. like those described by Wiersma and Treacy). That map indicates important areas of financial performance (e.g. accelerate organic growth) and the customer experiences to be emphasized (e.g. provide the best solutions) as well as process excellence (e.g. drive growth through innovation) and people expertise (e.g. leverage cross-business synergies) that will be required to support that achievement.

If the reader needs an explanation of the origins and fundamentals select Kaplan and Norton’s first book, “The Balanced Scorecard.” As one is seeking an overall approach description, choose their second book, “The Strategy Focused Organization.” When looking for a way to devise an enterprise strategy map and cascade that through the portfolio of business units and functions consider the fourth book, “Alignment.” For those at the point of bringing strategy and operations together in a continuous process for strategy management go with the fifth book, “The Execution Premium.”

But if you are concerned with illustrating an organization’s strategy as well as the links and interactions necessary to “bring it to life” pick up “Strategy Maps.”

Strategy, Alignment, Communication, Clarity

One of my earlier bosses required that any idea, process, program, etc. be presented using both words and graphics. He wouldn't review anything that didn't have a picture showing the process or relationships of ideas. So I tend to be an Excel spreadsheet, data kind of person although I really think I need to give this up (laugh)....drawing a picture isn't my strong suit, at least not then. Other reviewers have commented on strengths. I really like this book in the way we are called to imagine our organizations relationally via a graphic (strategy map). I learned that my bosses demand for a picture was because the process of taking words and creating an image required a person to really think through the coherence, relationship, and logic of their ideas. Words in combination with graphics can tell a story that taps into people's imaginations and speaks to differing learning preferences (auditory versus visual). I like this book because it provides a framework for systematically understanding your organization and the relational aspects of how things fit together ultimately in support of your mission.
