About the Author
Clive Alabaster is a Lecturer in the Department of Informatics and Systems Engineering at Cranfield University, UK. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Cranfield in 2004.

In 1985, after receiving his BSc, he joined GEC-Marconi in the microwave design group of the airborne radar division. He worked as a design and development engineer on the microwave synthesizer and front end receiver design of an airborne intercept radar fitted to a fast-strike aircraft. In 1992 he worked for Serco as a lecturer in radar and microwave engineering at the School of Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering, Arborfield Garrison, UK where he taught technicians of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps.

Alabaster joined the academic staff at Cranfield University in 1998. In 2001 he established a research program for medium PRF pulse Doppler waveforms, which has won several applied research contracts with industry and defense organizations.

About the Author
Paul M. Kennedy is J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University. He regularly publishes in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic, and many other periodicals and scholarly journals. The author of thirteen books, he is perhaps best known for The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. His most recent publication (2006) is The Parliament of Man: The Past, Present, and Future of the United Nations.

A Disturbing Book, in Many Ways

Without taking a definite position on Mahan or geopolitics,
the book presents British naval power as a textbook example
of how an island nation became first a regional naval power
and then rose to global pre-eminence. The parts about how
the first wave of global trade interacted with the Industrial
Revolution are especially interesting.

It then goes on to describe how a mixture of politics, social
problems, and economic neglect weakened the British Navy, at
a time when newly industrialized countries like Germany,
Japan, and America were becoming stronger.

The end of the story is well known, as two Pyrrhic Victories
against Germany shattered the British Empire in the 20th century.

As an American, I find the description of how Britain in the late
1800s neglected its education system and engaged in trade policies
which destroyed the physical economy to be much too close to home.
This book can be read as a cautionary tale of what could happen to
the United States is we are not careful.

Good review of British naval sea power both it's rise and fall. Easy to understand does not read like a textbook

MISLEADING, BIASED, YET INFORMATIVE.

The title of this book, in my opinion, is misleading. I was expecting Specifications of British Naval Vessels, Research & Development in Vessel Engineering, Naval Strategy, Naval Tactics, Seamen's skill sets & equipment vis-a-vis their main opponents during periods of peace & war etc during the rise & fall of British Naval Mastery. Instead this book was about British Geopolitics & Macro-economics & the British Navy's role within that framework. As interesting as this topic is, I was disappointed because I wanted to read a different book. However, this book does a decent job in addressing what this book is really about, albeit it being biased towards Britain being some kind of Holy Nation. The Author doesn't even mention once the term "Opium War(s)" or "Concentration Camps" which the British invented during the Boer War. The Author comes across as if Britain was doing the whole World some kind of favour by expanding & consolidating her interests. Very little was mentioned that Britain was emulating Portugal's & Holland's lead, they were the real pioneers of Colonialism & International Finance. Give me a break!

I will now succinctly describe Britain's geopolitical strategy during their rise & zenith: Assuming Britain was one of the top three nations in Western Europe, if the number one nation was in conflict with the number two nation, Britain would support the number two nation. If the number two nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If the number one nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If two out of the top three nations formed an alliance & there was a conflict between them & some other nation(s), Britain would support the weaker nations. While this was going on or not, Britain would expand & consolidate her overseas Empire whilst always either developing the strongest Navy on the planet or maintaining the strongest Navy on the planet. Throw in some skewed diplomacy, an obsession with Naval Blockades & voila, you have an enormous Empire while the rest of Western Europe was too busy asleep at the wheel to realise what was going on, even though they themselves were losing colonies all around the World to Britain. If you are wondering, how did they afford all this, the answer is that they had a very small Army, constructing vessels was not as expensive as in modern times, they invented Central Banking in 1694, the public accepted fiat currency once it was introduced & no nation came even close to them in the magnitude of international trade once they got to the zenith. Pretty simple if you ask me & you probably do not need to read the book anymore.

On the positive side, this book is well written, broken up in chapters that are logical i.e. the different periods during the rise, zenith & fall of the British Empire. Some interesting tables in regards to nation comparisons, vessels, macro-economic data etc during different periods. The improving & then decline in Britain's macro-economy is also well described, discussing inflation, national debt, trade deficits/surpluses & comparisons with other nations. For the Naval Strategists out there, the Author does sprinkle Mahan & Mackinder throughout this book, however I found it superficial & it left me wanting more. The Author also gets into the pivotal agreements over a short period of time which secured American hegemony, the passing of the baton, if you wish. Thank you Mr Kennedy for your contribution in this field, even though the title of your book was misleading & you are biased.

This should be required reading

I have read this book and it was like a light bulb went off. This book is not only true, and great reading it was great for my blood pressure. lol. I find that since reading this book I have learned to relax alot more when "things go wrong". I have order this book and given it to several friends they all have the same reaction. One friend who is a conspiracy theorist stated "they" don't want people to know things like this. You have got to get it and see what I'm talking about. it answered alot of question about people and problems that I have wondered about for my entire working life.

Matches the casebook perfectly

You can only use this as intended if it matches the casebook you are using. In this case, Chemerinsky's fourth edition. There is a brief for every Major case in the casebook (the ones with the red ink heading). The plethora of notes cases are not briefed, even though some of those are major cases that we discuss in class.

This is definitely a worthwhile purchase for a Con Law law student taking the Con Law class using this casebook.

Each brief gives an overview of the case as the Nature of the Case, Fact Summary, Rule of Law, and Issue in the case (basically, the pivotal issue that brought this case before SCOTUS). There is a more detailed overview of the case Facts (really helpful for highly-edited cases in the casebook), the Holding and Decision, then an Analysis which summarizes the important precedent or law that was decided in this case. Because a mere fraction of cases that are requested to be reviewed by the Highest Court are accepted, you can bet that every case decided by this Court will set a legal precedent.

Each brief concludes with Quicknotes that tie it to the major clauses in the Constitution (e.g., Dormant Commerce Clause). This makes class preparation much easier, and will help avoid that deer-in-the-headlights look when being cold-called. Definitely worth the price, considering what you're paying for the class.

When you have roughly 50 pages of cases to brief, not only in Constitutional Law, but in other courses as well, the time consumed in writing the brief, or making whatever notes you feel you need to make, is quite substantial. This publication does it for you and allows you to spend more time reading the case itself carefully knowing that an excellent brief has already been prepared for you. Highly recommended as a HUGE time saver, and that doesn't even consider that you'll probably end up with a better brief than you would have had time to prepare yourself.

I was hesitant to buy this because there were some mixed reviews, but I have found that it has saved me hours of briefing time. it is not a substitute for reading, but once you've read it has taken out all of the important parts and has them very neatly organized for you. there is also a thing in the front like the "study aid" laminated cheat sheets where it lays out in columns all of the absolutely necessary information. that is a great tool when working hypos and you mostly get the material but you just need an arrow saying left or right, or you need to rule for a particular topic really quick. I would buy this again in a heartbeat!

Interesting Sci-Fi Story

This is an excellent book for the younger crowd. It is an interesting and well written sci-fi book about a young teenager and the grandfather he loves and who has raised him. When a beautiful young girl appears at his school he feels that somehow he's met her before. The young man who's memory has been temporarily erased discovers that he and his grandfather are not human but aliens from another planet. He discovers that he is a great warrior who is needed to save his people and the girl he loves. Teenagers will relate to this story of courage, honor and a burning love that transcends time and space.

it really works!

eduard estivill is a spanish pediatrician, very famous in europe for his dedication to parents' good night sleep. this book really does work! don't be afraid and give it a try for 1 week; it might be hard but magically after few nights you will realize how golden these advices are.
my son slept through the night from he was 6-week-old and he never ever had any sleep problem ever since (he's 4 and a half now).

Good, but nothing new...

It is a famous book. The method is well known, nothing new was added to my knowledge.
It is a "let it cry" method, with some good advices.
It worked, but if you don't stick to it, you will loose it.
One night, 2 weeks after good night sleep, our son had teeth pain. We took him up, and we eased his pain by talking and walking him around the house.
Next night, we had to start the method all over again, from point zero.

great except for the ending

This was an exciting CD, except for the end. The CD ended with Ponzi's getting a 5 year sentence. Then what?? According to web sites, he escaped from jail, did some more grifting, and before dying stated:

I had given them the best show that was ever staged in their territory since the landing of the Pilgrims! It was easily worth fifteen million bucks to watch me put the thing over!

Why the CD ended without detailing Ponzi's adventures after his sentence is a mystery. It hurts an otherwise exciting story.

I purchased the audiocassette version of this book. The author tells the true story of a man who had a get-rich-quick scheme and its downfall. The book also includes short biographies of people mentioned throughout. The added bios, along with the underlying plot, make the book a page-turner. Or in my case, a tape turner.

There's a bad apple in every bunch...

Like many foreigners, Giles Murray has parlayed his experience with the Japanese language into big bucks - ok, well at least just a book. But before you run off adhering to everything prescribed in this book, PLEASE read this review. It is well worth your time.
There seem to be some good ideas in this book. One that I particularly found helpful (one that I had already intuitively realized) was the hint covered in Chapter 6, "The Synonym Generator". Basically, Mr. Murray recommends that one possess a vast array of words to describe a certain feeling or concept. That way, if one gets a mental block and is not able to remember one expression, they can dip into their bag of tricks and express themselves in another way. Another chapter where Mr. Murray discusses how to "describe your way" out of a jam when you can't think of a word in Japanese is EXCELLENT advice. This is more or less a survival Japanese tactic, but comes in handy for advanced students as well. Rather than sitting in a conversation with a dead look on your face, it's best to dumb it down, if for nothing else, to keep the conversation moving.
What I caution you to NOT follow, however, is Mr. Murray's advice regarding gairaigo, or loan words. There are thousands and thousands of directly borrowed and some slightly altered English words used in the Japanese language. While every student should become aware of their existence and correct usage, you should ABSOLUTELY NOT use them with the frequency that Mr. Murray suggests. You will do so at your own linguistic peril. For, you see, American (and British, Australian, etc.) students who rely on these words tend to not learn the Japanese equivalents. They also tend to use a disproportionate amount of them in their speech. I heard a figure one time saying that a MAXIMUM of 13% of a Japanese person's daily conversation is composed of loan words. This is a maximum, mind you.
So, not only do you limit your proficiency by depending on loan words, but you also send a signal to the listener that you don't really know the traditional Japanese versions. Furthermore, Japanese tend to linguistically discriminate against foreigners by using these loanwords with them because they don't believe they know the Japanese equivalent. I recall one time being at a station and the manager yelling to me to "chenji (change)" my ticket instead of telling me to "kaeru (change)" the ticket. This is linguistic discrimination - there's no other word for it - and following Mr. Murray's advice will cause Japanese to speak to you with a vocabulary unnaturally heavy in these words.
Don't get me wrong. There are times when they are useful, but DO NOT use them to the extent he recommends. For example, use the word "kyanseru (cancel) suru" for cancel, but DO NOT use the word "happii (happy)" for "shiawase (happy)". The message would get across with the former, but you'll also be displaying your ignorance of TRUE (yip, I said it, Mr. Murray) Japanese (ie kango and wago).
Mr. Murray, who happens to be a copywriter (and copywriters are NOTORIOUS for overimporting English into Japanese), may use these words to a grotesque and unnatural degree, but you shouldn't. Consider yourself warned.

Useful and fun, but not magic

"13 Secrets for Speaking Fluent Japanese" is an interesting, well put-together book that makes a nice supplement when learning Japanese. The use of Manga is appreciated, and the tone of the book is casual conversation. The target skill level is intermediate or so. Absolute beginners will find little value.
The "secrets" are all fairly useful, but they are not quick solutions or shortcuts. Each secret requires effort and study. Some of the solutions are simple, like "Read Manga in Japanese," whereas others are more complicated like the idea of using synonyms when you can not remember the exact word. (Such as: "I feel like a train ran over my head" rather than "I feel hung over.")
All in all, this book makes is a good addition to formal Japanese language learning. Just don't expect to buy it and have everything suddenly "click."

I have been studying Japanese for over seven years and have read countless textbooks and study guides, but I have never found such a unique blending of humor, practical tips, and useful study pointers as what's found in this wonderful book. "Thirteen Secrets" reinforces my belief that learning Japanese is fun, while being a totally unique language learning experience. Applicable to all study levels, this gem is a must for all folks interested in Japanese.

About the Author
Peter J. Norton, PhD, is Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University in Australia. Previously, he was Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston, where he directed the University's Anxiety Disorder Clinic. An internationally recognized expert in the study and cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety disorders, Dr. Norton has authored nearly 120 research studies; has delivered many presentations and workshops for the scientific community, therapists, and the general public; and sits on the editorial boards of two scientific journals. He is a recipient of the Theodore Blau Early Career Award for Outstanding Contribution to Professional Clinical Psychology from the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association), among other honors. His books include The Anti-Anxiety Workbook (for the general public) and Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Anxiety (for mental health professionals).

It works for most clients

The handouts are well designed and purposeful. I think group therapy works for most patients, using this approach. There are exceptions that would profit from individual therapy in adjunct to group. Very useful book from a distinguished author.
