Review
Twelve-year-old Stroma and her brother love summering in 1936 on the diamond-shaped island of Islay in the Hebrides with their grandparents, living in Craigmore, a large estate with one spigot and no electricity. One day a two-masted yacht arrives, piloted by a WWI U-boat commander revisiting the cove that had sheltered his sub for repairs, and with him are his two teen boys. Seventeen-year-old Reinhard is charmed by Stroma, first encountered as a dirty girl in ragged boy's clothes but who cleans up well enough to inspire their ensuing Hamburg-London correspondence. Authentic details permeate this well-paced wartime romance and tale of suspense, attracting WWII buffs as well as Mayhew's fans in this engrossing narrative journey of a young couple forced into opposing camps. She joins the British WRNS, or Wrens, the Women's Royal Navy Service, helping destroy the German "wolf pack" subs, one of which he commands, and an unlikely reunion results. -- Booklist, July 1, 2011

A different sort of wartime romance
By wogan
Margaret Mayhew writes some marvelous wartime romances; but `The Last Wolf' stands apart.
The wolf of the title, is not the animal, but taken from the name given to the groupings of German U-boats who hunted the convoys sailing from North America to England in WWII. The story captures the mood and the feelings of the people pre WWII - 1936 through the war and its aftermath.
It is always interesting and good to see war from the other side's perspective and this book accomplishes that.

This is the story of a young English girl, Stroma staying with her grandparents on the island of Islay. She meets a young German boy sailing with his father and brother. He in turn convinces her to write to him, and we see their friendship grow through the years until the war breaks out and he becomes a U-boat captain.
Mayhew does a marvelous job in conveying what many Germans felt and why they fought even if they did not support the politics of their leaders. We learn much about life on a sub and life for a noncombatant in London
There is one mention - a comparison to a flying saucer made in 1945, but that was not a term used until 1947.

However this is a book that accomplishes the twists and turns of a wartime romance, the dangers of war and achieves growth and believability in the characters, both the main and minor ones. One is not able to predict where the plot will lead- it is one of the better wartime romance I have ever read.

THE LAST WOLF
By Margaret H. Tedrick
I love Margaret Mayhew's books and this one did not disappoint!
As I am from Scotland it was good to be familiar with the islands
she was writing about, although that is certainly not necessary
because her writing is excellent.

World War II from both sides
By Too loud McLeod
I borrowed this book from the local library. I enjoyed it very much and got up early to finish it after staying up too late the previous evening with it. Excellent attention to detail. The kind of good read that can be difficult to find.
